The APEX Certification Program

APEX certification recognizes equine professionals who have demonstrated exceptional standards in horse welfare, professional competency, and ethical practice. This is not a pass/fail exam. It is an evidence-based evaluation of your real-world practice against documented, science-backed criteria. Certification is structured across three progressive levels — each building on the last.

Three Levels of Certification

Level 1 - Bronze Steward Member: 

The APEX Bronze Steward certification is the entry point into the APEX program. It recognizes professionals who have established foundational best practices in equine care, facility safety, and emergency preparedness.

Please note: The Bronze Steward level is an introductory certification. All members must progress to APEX Silver Guardian within 12 months of receiving their Level 1 certification.

Level 2 - Silver Guardian Member:

The APEX Silver Guardian certification recognizes professionals who have deepened their practices to include herd health management, environmental enrichment, and peer-reviewed evaluation. Achieving this level demonstrates a sustained commitment to equine welfare.

Level 3 - Gold Champion Member:

The APEX Gold Champion is the highest level of APEX certification. It is awarded to professionals who demonstrate mastery through video submissions, advanced assessment, a comprehensive continuing education record, and a verified on-site evaluation.

Site Visit Requirement Initial Gold Champion certification requires a site visit conducted by an APEX evaluator. Certified Gold Champions are subject to a site visit renewal every two years to maintain their certification status. Site visits are scheduled directly with the member by the APEX team.

Who Is Eligible?

APEX certification tracks are available for:

  • Equestrian Professionals (trainers, instructors, barn managers)

  • Farriers

  • Equine Bodyworkers (massage, osteopathy, PEMF, myofascial, craniosacral, chiropractic, acupuncture)

  • Veterinary Practices

The Application Process

Step 1:  Download your discipline's certification checklist.

Step 2:  Review the requirements for your target level.

Step 3:  Gather your supporting documentation.

Step 4:  Complete the online application.

Step 5:  Submit payment and any required video submissions.

Step 6:  Await review (4-6 weeks).

Step 7:  Receive your certification decision and, if approved, your APEX badge.

Note: Level 3 applicants must submit documentation of practice and consent to a site visit prior to certification.

Education Requirement

All certification levels include a continuing education component, APEX-approved education providers are listed in our Approved Education directory.  Education hours are verified through official transcripts or certificates of completion. 

  • Level 1 - 10 hours minimum.

  • Level 2 - 25 hours minimum.

  • Level 3 - 50 hours minimum.
